“Good matchup” gets thrown around constantly in DFS content, usually pointing at one stat — points allowed to the position — without the context that makes that stat useful. This page explains what actually goes into a real matchup read; each week’s post below applies it to that week’s real slate.
What “points allowed” actually measures
A defense’s fantasy points allowed to a position, relative to league
average, is a real signal — it’s a multiplier on that position’s baseline
projection (my own model’s matchup factor). But it’s a cumulative,
backward-looking number, which means it can mislead in a few specific
ways:
- Small samples early in the season — and zero samples in Week 1 specifically. Three games of data can be driven by one outlier performance, not a real defensive weakness. Week 1 is a sharper version of the same problem: there’s no current-season data to draw on at all, so the multiplier falls back entirely to how that defense performed in prior seasons. Real data, not invented — but it’s a roster and scheme from a year (or more) ago, not this one.
- Injuries on the defense. A defense that’s allowed a lot to receivers because their top cornerback has been hurt for six weeks isn’t necessarily still a soft matchup once that player is back.
- It doesn’t know about game script. A defense can be tough against the run in points-allowed terms simply because teams rarely need to run against them — they’re usually trailing. That’s a different signal than “hard to run against.”
The other half: game environment
A matchup read isn’t complete without the game-level context:
- Vegas total and spread. A high implied team total means more expected scoring plays for that offense, independent of who they’re playing. A big spread tells you which team is more likely to be throwing from behind (favors that team’s pass-catchers, and the other team’s positive-script runner).
- Pace. More plays run means more opportunities for everyone on the field, on both sides of the ball.
A genuinely good matchup combines a favorable points-allowed multiplier with a game environment that supports it — a soft matchup in a game projected for 35 total points matters more than the same matchup in a game projected for 38 with one team a 17-point favorite and running clock by the third quarter.
